AI law maps, charts and data for your story
Live graphics you can embed in an article, and the data behind them. They are built from every enacted AI law we track, with the same counts as the rest of the site, and they update on their own as new laws are enacted. Copy the code, paste it into your story, and you're done.
Map of AI laws by state
Any story on AI rulesEvery state and D.C., shaded by the number of enacted AI laws. Readers can switch to a topic, such as deepfakes or AI in hiring, and tap a state to see its laws.
Readers can still switch topics in the map.
AI laws taking effect
New Year and July 1 storiesThe next date when enacted AI laws are set to take effect, with a live countdown and the list of laws. Right now: 33 state AI laws are set to take effect January 1, 2027. When that date passes, the embed moves to the next one by itself.
AI laws enacted each year
Explainers and trend storiesA bar chart of enacted AI laws per year since 2019. 532 laws enacted by the states, D.C. and Congress since 2019, 150 of them in 2026 so far. This year's bar grows as new laws are enacted.
State card
Local newsOne state's enacted AI laws: how it ranks, its main topics, its most recent law and the next one to take effect, with a link to every law.
Law card
Stories about one lawOne enacted law: its effective date, a plain-English summary, its key provisions, and links to our full summary and the official text. If its dates change, the card changes too.
Paste the link of any enacted law's page on this site, or open the law's page and choose "Embed".
That doesn't look like a law page link. It should look like https://www.ailawsbystate.com/law/CO/…
Data files
Your own chartsThe same data as the embeds, as files you can open in a spreadsheet or link from a chart tool. The links never change, and the files update with the site.
| File | What's in it |
|---|---|
Laws by state (CSV)https://www.ailawsbystate.com/data/ai-laws-by-state.csv | One row per state and D.C.: the number of enacted AI laws, then the number per topic. The columns stay the same, so charts linked to this file keep working. |
Every enacted AI law (CSV)https://www.ailawsbystate.com/data/ai-laws.csv | One row per law: jurisdiction, bill number, title, date enacted, effective date, topics, our page and the official text. enacted_date_source says where each enactment date comes from: reviewed (checked in our state-by-state review) or last_action (the date of the bill's last recorded action, used where the review has no date). |
Every enacted AI law (JSON)https://www.ailawsbystate.com/data/ai-laws.json | The same list, plus the totals, for developers. |

How to cite
Source: AI Laws by State (ailawsbystate.com), data as of October 14, 2026.

What counts as an AI law. We count a law when its enacted text has a substantive provision about AI or a closely related technology: an obligation, ban, right, crime, disclosure rule or admissibility standard, or a government body created with duties, about AI, machine learning, deepfakes and other synthetic media, automated decision systems (including recommendation algorithms), facial recognition, or self-driving vehicles and robots. Laws that only define AI as a term, fund it in a budget line or ask for a study are not counted. Each bill is counted once. Read the full rule.
Questions
Do the embeds update on their own?
Yes. Every embed reads the same database as the site. When a law is added or its dates change, the embeds show it within about two hours, with no change to your article.
Will they fit my page?
Yes. They fill the width they are given, from phone to desktop. With the one-line script included, the frame also grows or shrinks to fit its content. Without it, the frame keeps the height in the code, which you can change.
Do they set cookies?
No. The embeds set no cookies and show no ads.
Can I use them in my reporting?
Yes. Use them in news stories and explainers, and keep the credit line.
Can I reuse the data?
Yes. The data files are licensed CC BY 4.0: you can use, adapt and republish them, including commercially, as long as you credit "AI Laws by State" with a link to ailawsbystate.com.
Can I change the colors or wording?
Not in the embeds, so readers can always see where the numbers come from. For your own design, use the data files above.
Why do the topic numbers add up to more than the total?
A law can cover more than one topic. A deepfake law about elections counts under both deepfakes and AI in political ads.
